Great-horned owlet's first fly
This baby great-horned owl took its first flight at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge last Saturday. With the parents calling 200 feet away, his brother jumped out their nest and landed on the launch pad, a high branch closets to their parents. It took another 10 minutes for this little guy to make the move. He crawled out their nest, held tight to the branch, and crawled very carefully toward the launch pad where his brother was waiting. He started to walk after a while using his wings for balancing. His body wobbled so vigorously in the wind that I was really worried that he might fall off the tree. But he made it to the launch pad. Thirty minutes later he was in the air.
